The word "nafsu" (derived from the Arabic nafs) generally means desire, drive, or passion.
In Malay culture, the word nafsu is often associated with temptation or excess. But through psychology, art, and spiritual inquiry, I became interested in a broader understanding of it.
What if desire isn’t something to suppress entirely, but something to understand?
And from that understanding,
What can our desires reveal about our fears, ambitions, habits, and sense of self?
--
Developed in 2021 after years of sketching, writing, observing, and studying human behavior, it emerged from a simple realization: many of the things we pursue are driven by desire.
Nafsu exists as an ongoing exploration of our desires through products, garments, printed matter, visuals, scent, music, and conversation.
The project is also informed by Islamic thought and Sufi teachings, where the journey is not about denying the self, but understanding it deeply enough to transform it. Between desire and discipline, ego and presence, there is a space for reflection.
Beyond being a brand, its purpose is to encourage people to become more conscious of their desires.
Question them, understand them, and ultimately cultivate a deeper relationship with themselves and the world around them.
